Stories bring life to the causes we all fight for – especially when testifying in front of D.C. City Councilmembers. Join the ACLU-DC for an afternoon of creation with the Storytelling For Advocacy Workshop on March 20, 12 - 1:30pm. Our focus this month will be testifying during the District Council’s Performance and Oversight Hearings and Roundtables, where residents and advocates have the opportunity to make their views known and have them incorporated into the official committee record.

During this workshop we will cover:

  • Why is your advocacy needed?
  • Storytelling Tips
  • Watch sample testimony to Council
  • 7 Steps To Storytelling for Advocacy
  • Tips and template for written, oral, and recorded testimony
  • Upcoming dates for important Council Hearings

Budgets make a city’s priorities clear – in stark numerical form. By choosing how to spend our public dollars, the Mayor and the D.C. Council tell us what’s worth investment – and what isn’t. How is DC spending our money? What are our priorities and values? And how can you leverage the budget process in your citizen advocacy? Join speakers from Bread for the City, DC Fiscal Policy Institute, and the D.C. Council Office of Racial Equity, who will walk you through one of the Council’s most important processes and how it affects you and your neighbors.

This event is free and open to all. Closed captioning will be available with American Sign Language and Spanish interpretation available upon request. Please indicate if you need interpretation when registering. Spanish interpretation and closed captioning will be provided.

Speakers:

  • Ahoefa Ananouko, ACLU-DC (moderator)
  • Eliana Golding, DC Fiscal Policy Institute
  • Dr. Brian McClure, D.C. Council Office of Racial Equity
  • Aja Taylor, Bread for the City
  • Lark Catoe-Emerson, Bread for the City

-----------------------
