Background:
The Peace DC package of criminal justice related bills includes, the Pretrial Detention Amendment Act of 2025, and the Residential Tranquility Amendment Act of 2025. Each of these bills, as written, raise concerns for the ACLU-DC.
Specifically, the Pretrial Detention bill is being proposed before completion of the CJCC report on pretrial detention. If nothing else, this bill is premature.
The Residential Tranquility bill raises concerns about protecting First Amendment rights, as this bill is aimed at restricting protests in residential neighborhoods.
Our Position:
We are recommending No votes on these bills unless there are significant amendments made.
